Wilshire 5000(SM) Wilshire Sees Best October Performance Since 2003


Wilshire Global Total Market Index Up 4.11 Percent for the MonthWith Europe Leading the Way


SANTA MONICA, CA - The Wilshire 5000 Total Market IndexSM, the original pure and completeSM measure of the U.S. stock market, closed September 30, 2010 at 12,489.09, up 3.89 percent for the month. This brought its year-to-date return to 9.08 percent and resulted in an estimated increase in market value of $500 billion during the month, according to Wilshire Associates Incorporated, a global independent investment consulting and services firm.

During October, the global securities market built on September's broad-based gains with all sectors in all regions in positive territory except four, with Health Care at or near the bottom of performance for most regions, said Robert J. Waid, managing director, Wilshire Associates and head of Wilshire Index Research. For the second month in a row, the Wilshire Europe IndexSMled the way as the best performing regional index, but still lagged the year-to-date return of all the other major regional indices.

During the month of October the Wilshire Global Total Market IndexSMsaw a gain of 4.11 percent. The Wilshire Global exUS IndexSMwas up 4.25 percent this past month.

On a regional basis, Europe outperformed Latin America, Asia/Pacific, and Middle East & Africa by posting the largest monthly gain of 5.69 percent as measured by the Wilshire Regional IndexesSM. Middle East & Africa posted the narrowest gain of 1.99 percent for the month.

The Wilshire US Small-Cap IndexSM posted a monthly gain of 4.00 percent. The Wilshire Global Small-Cap IndexSMposted a monthly increase of 4.01 percent. The Wilshire US Micro-Cap IndexSM had an up month with a gain of 4.26 percent. The Wilshire US Large-Cap IndexSM was up 3.87 percent for the month. On a global basis, the Wilshire Global Large-Cap IndexSMposted a monthly gain of 4.13 percent.

In the United States, the Wilshire US Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) IndexSM rose 4.70 percent and the Wilshire US Real Estate Securities IndexSM (RESI) gained 4.88 percent. The Wilshire Global REIT IndexSMposted a 4.74 percent increase. The Wilshire Global RESISM closed the month up 4.73 percent.
